(1994) Speed

Now THIS is a movie. First rewatch on this list, and totally worth it. I don’t even know where to start. Just watch it. Even if you did, watch it again, right now. I’ll wait.

Story

I’m sure everyone knows this movie, but here’s a short recap: There’s a big bomb (and I don’t mean Sandra, an actual bomb) on the bus that will explode if the bus slows down under 50 miles per hour.

Most of the movie happens inside the said bus, which might sound boring, but OH MAN is it tense. It’s like a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. You get only a short window to catch your breath, and then the chaos starts all over. Get something to snack on, your nails will be grateful.

Stuck on the bus are Annie Bullock as the replacement bus driver, Keanu Reeves as the cop trying to save everyone, and a nondescript bunch of people who just get in the way of the plot. Seriously, some of those guys are the worst, but that was their point, so they obviously did their jobs right.

The movie ends on a high, with Annie and Jack Reeves getting together. Just because, can’t have a movie without a romantic subplot. But, as far as her movie partners go, I approve of Jack, and their on-screen chemistry really worked. He’s stellar, especially when compared to Paul the magical rapist from Love Potion No. 9.

Final Verdict

Love the cast, love the story, love the soundtrack. Once it picks up momentum, there’s no slowing down. The only legit complaint about this movie is that Sandra isn’t in the first half hour of it. Everything else is brilliant! Can’t wait to watch the sequel. Well, kinda.
