(2021) The Unforgivable
How does one rebuild their life after doing something unforgivable? Like what if someone kills a cop (spoiler alert), or makes a mediocre movie that someone else has to put a positive spin on because it’s their whole gimmick (even spoilerer alert)? Can they ever go on? Should they? What Do They Know? Do They Know Things?? Let’s Find Out!
This movie tries to answer (most of) these questions. And the answer is yes, somewhat, kind of. Maybe? I guess.
Plot
Sandra Ruth Slater is released after serving a million years in prison for doing something horrible.
The movie then turns into a montage of her meeting her new roommates, her parole officer, getting an awful job… The usual ex-prisoner stuff.
All she wants is to find out if her sister is fine, and everyone in the movie is hell-bent on stopping her.
Why? Because Ruth is a COP KILLER! That’s right. She killed a sheriff to protect her 5 year old sister when the cops came to evict them after their father died.
Yada, yada, yada, she manages to get her sister kidnapped by one of the dead sheriff’s sons who wanted revenge. It also turns out she didn’t even kill the sheriff, her little sister did. Thank you flashbacks! Then she saves the day and her sister hugs her. Everything is great? Roll credits (and also eyes).
Problems
To say that this movie has issues would be an understatement of the year. Sandra gives a strong performance and carries the entire movie by herself. Her emotional scenes are the only ones worth watching. Everything else is… just meh.
The first half of the movie, with the montage, feels like someone put together a best of compilation of scenes from a longer show (and it turns out this started as a remake of a miniseries, so yay for me for being a professional reviewer that notices things).
Scenes don’t have weight to them, everything just kind of happens to show how rough life is for Ruth. Some things are glossed over, others feel crammed in to serve as a plot device, characters make decisions that don’t really seem logical or based on what’s happening….
Additionally, this movie has a score by Hans Zimmer, and you can barely notice it. UNFORGIVABLE.
Since Sandra is also listed as one of the producers, we can safely assume that the other two people interfered and are 100% responsible for this mess.
All that being said, a solid 10/10. I wouldn’t be able to FORGIVE myself if I gave it anything less than that.
